My Top 5 Pet Peeves
5. People who go slow at the salad bar. It's not a decorating contest! I like to fly through, slop everything on top of the lettuce and head back to devour. But I always seem to be behind people who prefer to artfully arrange the julienned carrots over their carefully positioned beets.
4. People who narrate their driving. "Let me in! I'm trying to get over!" "Wow, that guy had a lot of bumper stickers on his car." "Slow down, asshole!" "I'm sorry, I took that turn too fast." "What the hell is that SUV DOING???" When I'm in a car with someone, I like to have a conversation that's not an observational dialogue on the road in front of us. I also try to limit my own tendency to do this when I'm the one driving.
3. Emails that go unanswered. Argh, I hate this one! I have no way of knowing if in fact you did get my term paper on time, professor, or if you know that our meeting is today, boss. You agonize until you ask them about it later, and they're like, "oh yeah, no, I got your email." Then reply to it! It's bad enough when a friend or crush doesn't reply to your heartfelt email, but how hard is it in a professional setting to type back a quick "got it, thanks," just to give the sender some peace of mind?2. When the person ahead of you at the supermarket pays with a check. See how long it takes to dig out your checkbook, fill out the info and the amount, get out your driver's license, wait for the cashier to write down your info and run it through the machine...It's 2009! Get a debit card! I worked as a cashier in college and I would always dread the little old ladies who would pull out their checkbooks and slowly write out everything in their flowery script.
1. YOUR does not equal YOU'RE, and other grammar catastrophes. As a writer and editor I've seen everything: "a lot" as one word, run-on sentences, "than" for "then," no spaces between words (seriously!)....it's not that hard to learn basic spelling and grammar and follow them! It will make the world a happier place. And don't get me started on unnecessary quotation marks...So those are my weird pet peeves. Do you agree? What are yours?
